A-COLD-WALL* in Rotterdam: the first global release, 2015
Before A-COLD-WALL* had stockists in Tokyo, Seoul or New York, it had a room in Rotterdam. In 2015 the label's first global release took place at ANSH46 on Van Oldenbarneveltstraat, staged not as a delivery but as a spatial art installation built together with founder Samuel Ross.
A label that arrived as an argument
Samuel Ross founded A-COLD-WALL* in London in 2015. From the beginning the label read less like a clothing line and more like a thesis: British class structure, industrial material culture and the visual language of construction sites, translated into garments. Plaster, workwear proportions, exposed hardware, surfaces that looked like they had been through something.
That is a difficult proposition to sell off a rail. Hung between other brands, an early A-COLD-WALL* piece reads as an odd jacket. Placed inside the world it came from, it reads as the point.
Building the room
So we built the world. The release was produced as an installation rather than a display: raw material, industrial surfaces and a treatment of the floor plane that turned the shop into something closer to a site than a store. Ross was involved directly in the creative direction; execution was handled in-house by the ANSH46 team.
Visitors did not walk into a shop that happened to be carrying a new brand. They walked into an environment, and the clothing was legible because of it. Nobody had to be told what the material references were.
Why a Rotterdam store got the first release
The question we still get asked is why a young London designer chose an independent Dutch retailer for a global first. The honest answer is that we offered something a larger account could not: the entire floor, the whole room, and a team willing to build it.
Rotterdam helped. Van Oldenbarneveltstraat sits in the middle of the city's design district, minutes from the Witte de Withkwartier, surrounded by architecture studios and galleries. It is a street where a store behaving like an exhibition space does not look out of place. A city rebuilt on purpose tends to attract people comfortable with things being under construction.
The method it established
The A-COLD-WALL* release set the pattern for everything that followed. Vitrines, plinths and a blue floor plane; the room rebuilt per brand and per drop. In 2016 the same approach produced the "Respect the Art" exhibition around Yeezy Season 3, hung across the full floor like a gallery show. In 2017 it produced the ALYX Studio launch, with suspended display and industrial hardware, and a photographic installation for Pusha T shot by Fabien Montique. In 2018 the store was planted and saturated for Marine Serre.
Product presented as work rather than stock. That framing is the reason brands have kept launching here first.
Ten years on
A-COLD-WALL* is now a fixture of the international menswear conversation, and Samuel Ross's practice extends well beyond clothing into furniture, sculpture and industrial design. The early collections have become archive material, traded and studied.
We still carry the label, and we still stage it the same way.
