Acne Studios began as an acronym, and the acronym was a joke about ambition: Ambition to Create Novel Expressions. In 1996 it belonged to a small Stockholm creative collective doing graphic design and advertising. Clothing was a side project.

One hundred pairs of jeans

The side project was a run of raw denim jeans made by Jonny Johansson, cut straight, stitched in red, and given away to friends. Not sold. Given away. They were noticed, they were asked about, and within a few years the collective's side project had become the thing the collective was known for.

It is worth pausing on that origin, because it explains a lot about the label thirty years later. Acne Studios was never designed as a fashion house working backwards from a market. It was a group of people making something they wanted to exist, and the commercial structure arrived afterwards.

What Scandinavian minimalism actually means here

Acne Studios gets filed under Scandinavian minimalism, which is accurate and also misleading. Minimal usually implies restraint in every direction. Acne Studios is restrained in decoration and anything but restrained in proportion.

The shoulder sits somewhere unexpected. The trouser is wider or shorter than the reference it is quoting. Colour is used in shades that do not have easy names — a pink that is nearly beige, a blue that is nearly grey. Fabrics are frequently developed specifically rather than bought off a mill's standard book.

The result is clothing that looks plain in a photograph and reads as considered in person. That gap is the whole proposition, and it is why the brand rewards being seen on a body rather than on a screen.

Beyond clothing

The collective habit never went away. Acne Studios has run a magazine, published books, made furniture, and collaborated across art and design in ways that have nothing to do with selling a garment. The stores are built as spaces rather than shops. It is one of the few labels of its size where the non-commercial output is not marketing dressed up as culture.

That is a sensibility we recognise. Presenting product as work rather than stock is the same instinct, applied to a different room.

Buying it

Denim is still the anchor, and the raw denim runs true but stiff. It will soften and mould, and it is meant to. If you want it to fit immediately, you are buying the wrong wash.

Knitwear and outerwear are where the proportion play is most visible. Take the size that gives you the shoulder line, not the size that gives you the chest — the volume is deliberate and the drop is designed.

The face-logo pieces are the recognisable ones, but the strongest items in most seasons are the quiet ones. Ask on the floor if you want the pieces that actually last.

At ANSH46

Acne Studios sits on our rail alongside younger labels and older maisons, which is exactly where it belongs — the brand has always moved between those registers itself.

Stockholm to Rotterdam is a short line. Both cities rebuilt themselves and both prefer things that do not shout.
