In 2025 the Palais Galliera, Paris's fashion museum, gave Rick Owens its entire building. Rick Owens: Temple of Love ran from 28 June 2025 to 4 January 2026, more than a hundred silhouettes, with Owens directing the whole thing himself — concrete sculptures in the garden, gold statues in the windows, Californian planting outside a nineteenth-century Paris façade.

Thirty years earlier he was cutting patterns on Hollywood Boulevard with no expectation of any of it.

Los Angeles, 1994

Owens grew up in Porterville, in California's Central Valley, and went to pattern-cutting school in Los Angeles rather than a design programme. That distinction runs through everything he has made since. He learned the garment from the inside, as a construction problem, before he ever had a house style.

The label he founded in 1994 sold to a small audience inside LA's glam rock and grunge circles. The early work was deliberately destroyed — decaying fabrics, distressed leather, a look Owens has since described as an adolescent reaction to the status quo. It was contempt, expressed in cloth.

Paris, 2001

The move that changed the scale of the thing was moving production to Italy and himself to Paris, with Michèle Lamy, his partner and collaborator. Italian manufacturing gave the ideas a level of finish they had never had. Paris gave them an audience that took them seriously.

What emerged is the language people now recognise instantly: elongation, bias cuts, leather coats with jersey sleeves, a palette that barely moves off black and dust. Gothic romanticism run through Brutalist structure and minimalist restraint. Clothing that reads as both ancient and post-apocalyptic, often in the same piece.

Why it is difficult, and why that matters

Rick Owens is the brand people are most often nervous about buying, and the one they wear longest once they do.

The difficulty is real. The proportions are not familiar. A jacket that looks strange on a hanger resolves completely on a body, and there is no way to know that from a photograph. This is the clearest possible case for what we do on the floor: the piece has to be tried, and once it is, the conversation ends.

Owens himself has changed. He has said that rejection stopped feeling like enough — that in a world already chaotic, formality is a form of politeness. His own dress now is black, sharp and tailored. The recent collections carry that shift.

Buying it

Sizing is the whole question. Rick Owens main line and DRKSHDW cut differently, and neither maps onto standard sizing. Come in, or ask us before ordering — this is not a label to guess at.

The leather is heavy and will take on the wearer. Do not condition it aggressively in the first year; let it move first.

Entry points that work: knitwear, the jersey pieces, and DRKSHDW denim. All carry the silhouette without committing to the full statement.
